Start and run capacitors store the energy that gets compressors and fan motors turning and keeps them running efficiently. In Oman's heat they are the most frequent failure: the outdoor unit hums, the fan does not start, or the compressor trips. They are also one of the cheapest and quickest AC repairs.
Choosing capacitors
- Match the capacitance (µF) and the voltage rating printed on the old capacitor; the new one should not be lower than the old.
- Choose a dual capacitor (with C, Fan and Herm terminals) when the old one has three terminals.
- Switch off the power and discharge the capacitor before touching it, and let a technician fit it if you are unsure.
